Watch_Dogs Graphical Worry

I am worried. 😦 When I first saw Watch_Dogs I was stunned by how pretty it looked, and was very much looking forward to next-gen visuals.

With every trailer I see of Watch_Dogs the visuals seem to be getting lower and lower in quality. Now that the miniumu spec requirements have been released for PC my worry has increased again.

Minimum PC spec

IntelCore 2 Quad Q8400 2.66Ghz or AMDPhenom II X4 940 3.0Ghz,
6GB RAM, 1024 VRAM DirectX 11 Shader 5.0
SCard: DirectX9

Now i know the unvail of the game was on PC upgraded to console spec. But i was not aware that the differences would be so aparent closer to release. And I am not the only one to worry. Many gamers have questioned Ubisoft as to what is going on with the graphical quality of the game. With a minimum of 6GB of RAM needed what is the recommended? Next-gen consoles only have 8GB and 3GB of that is used by the OS! Just concerned that so early in the new console game and we are seeing serious differences in quality across all platforms.

Think about this. When the Xbox came out, it was better spec than most gaming PCs. When X360 came out, it was better spec than most gaming PCs. When X1 came out, It was not better spec than most gaming PCs. There is a great article here that goes into more detial.

Creative director Jonathan Morin went to twitter to explain. “Guys… Trailer wasn’t a good GFX ref. E3 2012 was PC as we always said and E3 2013 is PS4 reference. It was always the case.” He continued: “PC on very high setting is REALLY stunning if you ask me. As for density it also very high of course. It will look great and play smoothly.” (Yeh. On PC)

If not convinced check out the vids below. First being the recent trailer and second being the gameplay at E3 2012.

  1. Interesting article. It’s safe to say the game is going to look a lot better on PC. That has always been the norm and I don’t see it changing anytime soon – particularly for multi-format games like this where it is coming out on current-gen hardware as well as next-gen.
I know I’m usually the first to point out that graphics are an important factor with these new games, but the new boxes simply cannot compete with the ever-changing PC hardware so I honestly wouldn’t worry about it too much. If the game is fun, the rest is a bonus.

  2. I would understand this towards the end of a console lifecycle. But only 4 months in! Seriously!?

    • I don’t ever see consoles catching up with PCs unfortunately. So long as the console exclusives look stunning and the multi-formats are “OK” I think that’s the best we can hope for really 🙂

      • It does push the fact that this console gen will more than likley be only 4-5 years before we see the next one.

      • Agreed. The problem is Sony/Microsoft are essentially trying to sell us entry-level PCs but aren’t thinking about the long term. I don’t doubt for one minute that Sony will continue to support the PS4 for 10 years as normal, but I can certainly see the PS5/X2 being here sooner than we first thought
